GATI/GACP : Gishwati Are Conservation Program is a joint effort of the Rwandan government with Great Ape Trust and Earthpark, Iowa-based projects funded by Des Moines businessman Ted Townsend. The Project was unveiled by Townsend and Rwanda President H.E Paul KAGAME in September 2007 at Clinton Global Initiative. The Objectives are :
• To create a National Conservation Park in the Gishwati National Forest,
• To restore ecosystem services in the form of improved water quality ; reduced soil erosion and flooding ; fewer landslides ; and increased sequestration of carbon.
• Restore natural Biodiversity, with special emphasis on chimpanzees as a keystone and flagship species.
• Generate income through ecotourism, investment opportunity, and local employment.
